Community Wireless Networks
This site covers the basics of setting up a community wireless network. Every community network needs to be designed to suit its particular requirements; there is certainly no 'one size fits all' solution. The advice given here focuses mainly on a rural situation where even within population centres, such as villages, the houses are scattered over a wide area.
All the key elements of such a system are dealt with on the site. However, in some cases it has been simplified to a bare outline or a description which, whilst not technically accurate, serves as a simple explanation that should suffice for most purposes. This is not designed to be a technical guide, but merely sufficient information to allow you work out what is involved in the process.
Community Internet Service Provider
Although there are many types of community wireless networks, here we will deal with the most common type: the Community ISP (Internet Service Provider). The key points of such a system are
- The Internet Feed – commonly a leased line
- The Network Services – email and web servers, bandwidth control, controlling access and security.
- Wireless Distribution – distributing the internet and services to the community.
